Flip UltraHD Video Camera – An Overview
The Flip UltraHD Video Camera is one of the bestselling pocket video cameras on the market. And that since years. While it might not offer all the bells and whistles of some of its competitors, it has one big advantage. It’s just so simple to use. Point, press the red button and film. Nothing beats the simplicity of the Flip UltraHD Video Camera. If you can live with a few less features than for example the Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera offers then the Flip UltraHD Video Camera is the best pocket camcorder you can get at this time.
Flip UltraHD Video Camera – Image Stabilization
The Flip UltraHD Video Camera has integrated image stabilization. In the past you had to train your hand for hours to get to the point that you could shoot a video with a Flip camera without massive image shaking. The new Flip UltraHD Video Camera offers image stabilization that really works. As long as you don’t shake in big jolts the image stays stable with great video quality.
Flip UltraHD Video Camera – Memory and Recording Features
The Flip UltraHD Video Camera allows you to capture up to 2 hours of video at a 720p resolution with 60 frames per second (fps). The Flip UltraHD Video Camera does not support any other resolution nor does it offer a memory extension port. The 720p resolution is sufficient for video sharing on YouTube and other video portals. The 60fps allow to shoot fast moving video like sports or action without flickering. However, we find it restricting to not have a memory expansion option. Not that 2 hours of video at a time isn’t enough most of the time, but you might be on vacation and shoot a lot of video and run out of space.
The microphone of the Flip UltraHD Video Camera is good and will suffice in most situation. Unfortunately, the Flip UltraHD Video Camera does not offer a standard microphone jack that would allow you to use an external microphone. You can however use a microphone that is designed for the FlipPort. As you can imagine though this microphone will only work on the FlipPort and can’t be used on other devices.
Flip UltraHD Video Camera – Connectivity And Built-In Screen
The Flip UltraHD Video Camera offers the newly designed FlipPort to connect different external devices as for example special microphones. The built-in USB 2.0 connector allows you to connect the Flip UltraHD Video Camera to your computer. The provided software allows for easy sharing of videos on many video sites.
The batteries are rechargable. They can simply be switched out for 3 AAA batteries if you’re on the road and forgot the charger or can’t connect the camera to the USB port. This certainly makes the Flip UltraHD Video Camera very easy to travel with.
The camera has a built-in 2 inch LCD which allows you to quickly review any video that you have recorded. Do not expect to be able to get a good view with this LCD screen but it is sufficient for quick reviewing of videos.
Flip UltraHD Video Camera – Conclusion
While we love the simplicity of the Flip UltraHD Video Camera we have to say that we miss quite a few features that other pocket camcorders offer. Started by the lack of memory expansion and connectivity to the fixed video resolution, if you need any of these features, then the Flip UltraHD Video Camera is not for you. If you want a pocket camcorder that is simple to use as in switch on, point and press the red button to record then this is the right camera for you.
